Wisdom’s Constraint and the Making of Sanctuary

Many men live under the spell of progress: the belief that we can resolve whatever is wrong by moving faster, working harder, and becoming more capable.

Often, that lifestyle seems to work. But over time, the same strengths that helped us succeed begin to wear something down, especially in our friendships, our homes, and the places where we are most deeply known.

Wisdom’s Constraint is an invitation for men to slow down together and notice what happens when effort, competence, and clarity no longer answer the deeper questions of our lives. In a time marked by exhaustion, polarization, loneliness, and uncertainty, this retreat will explore a deeper crisis beneath the surface: a crisis of relationality.

Together, we will consider what it means to cultivate relational stamina: the capacity to stay present, grounded, and connected when things break down, remain unresolved, or cost more than they give. The point isn’t to abandon strength but to discover a more resilient strength within relationships.

How to Participate:

  • Online via Zoom: Gather locally in groups of 3 or more men and watch the retreat live.

  • In Person at Richmond Hill: We encourage men in the Maryland, DC, and Virginia areas to join us in person at Richmond Hill, Virginia.

  • Don’t Just Listen—Engage: This event isn’t just a broadcast. Terry Chapman and Jim Burns will facilitate an interactive, integrated, and participatory experience.
