A New Kind of ECC Offering
Wisdom’s Constraint represents an innovation in how ECC gathers and learns together.
Designed as an eight-part hybrid experience, Wisdom’s Constraint will be accessible to men and groups across the entire ECC region—from Maine to Florida—whether gathering locally or participating individually.
The journey unfolds in three movements:
Prelude (On-Demand Video)
A short introductory video establishes shared language and opens the themes—offering a gentle entry point that can be engaged at your own pace.Opening Retreat (Hybrid: In Person + Live Stream)
A Friday evening through Saturday gathering in the Mid-Atlantic region (Virginia or Maryland), designed as a spacious container for reflection, teaching, and shared practice. The entire retreat will be live-streamed, allowing councils and individuals across the East Coast to participate in real time.Integration (Six Zoom Sessions)
Over the following weeks, six guided online sessions provide an ongoing rhythm of return—supporting the integration of these practices into daily life and relationships.
The Themes We Will Explore
Throughout the journey, participants will engage a set of deeply relevant and timely themes, including:
The tension between progress and relational cost
The role of Sabbath as a necessary constraint
Recognizing and navigating thresholds and impasse
The practice of kenosis—letting go to make space for what is deeper
The role of suffering in shaping relational depth
These are not approached as abstract ideas, but as lived realities—explored through story, teaching, silence, and council practice.
The aim is not mastery, but awareness. Not achievement, but relationship.
A Different Kind of Rhythm
What makes this offering distinctive is its emphasis on rhythm over intensity.
Rather than a one-time event, Wisdom’s Constraint creates an ongoing field of practice—a shared commitment to return, again and again, to presence.
Participants often discover:
A renewed capacity to pause in the midst of movement
Greater awareness of their inner and relational lives
A deepening ability to listen—both inwardly and outwardly
A subtle but meaningful shift from urgency toward attentiveness
Over time, something begins to change. Not dramatically, but steadily. The pace loosens its grip. Relationships deepen. Life becomes more inhabitable.
An Invitation to Councils and Communities
ECC conveners are especially hopeful that this offering will serve as a resource for councils and regional groups seeking to deepen their shared work. Councils and local, state and regional groups are encouraged to engage the experience together—either by attending in person, joining virtually, or weaving the material into their regular gatherings as a complement or alternative to standard council format.
For some, it may replace a cycle of regular council meetings.
For others, it may run alongside them—adding a layer of shared teaching, reflection, and practice.
In either case, the invitation is the same: to step, together, into a different rhythm.
Summary
In a time defined by acceleration, the willingness to pause may be one of the most meaningful acts we can take.
Wisdom’s Constraint is an opportunity to do that—not alone, but in community.
